Am Ufer des Genesee gelegen, dem "Fluss der vielen Fälle", wie die dort ursprünglich siedelnden Seneca-Indianer das Gebiet nannten, veränderte sich der Ort ab 1823 durch den Bau des Erie-Kanals schlagartig. Die zahlreichen Mühlen brachten Rochester den Beinamen Flour (Mehl) City ein, der ihr für lange Zeit erhalten blieb und dann überging in Flower City, was auf die später entstandene florierende Blumenzucht hinweist. Die Messe- und Kongressstadt Rochester ist u.a. Hauptsitz der Konzerne Xerox, Eastman Kodak & Co. und Bausch & Lomb sowie Sitz mehrerer namhafter Hochschulen, wie der University of Rochester, des Rochester Institute of Technology und der Eastman School of Music. Around 1823 the site, situated on the shore of the Genesee - the River of the High Falls, as the Seneca Indians called the place - changed rapidly with the construction of the Erie Canal. The numerous mills, which had been built subsequently, gave Rochester the nickname Flour City, which later changed into Flower City, referring to the city’s thriving nursery industry. The trade fair and congress city Rochester is - amongst other things - the headquarters of corporations like Xerox, Eastman Kodak & Co, Bausch & Lomb, as well as the home of well known universities like the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology and the Eastman School of Music. Conditions for golfers and people who enjoy wine are excellent - golf courses and vineyards can be found in vast numbers!
