Von Insidern wird Otsu gerne als "grüne Stadt am Wasser" bezeichnet, weil sie herrlich gelegen ist zwischen dem Biwa-See und den Bergen. 667 nach Christus zum ersten Mal genannt, verdankt die Stadt der zentralen Lage sowie dem wichtigen Knotenpunkt für den Schiffsverkehr ihre anhaltende spirituelle, wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Blüte. Der Enryaku-Tempel, der vor etwa 1200 Jahren gegründet wurde, gehört zu den bedeutendsten heiligen Stätten des Buddhismus in Japan und wurde mitsamt seiner 200 Gebäude in die Liste der Weltkulturgüter der Unesco aufgenommen. Wirtschaftlich gesehen gibt es noch einige traditionelle Handwerke in Otsu, aber natürlich sind inzwischen auch zahlreiche Firmen, zum Beispiel des Elektroniksektors, angesiedelt.
Die Bürger von Otsu feiern gerne große Feste, von denen das Feuerwerk am Biwa-See im August besonders glanzvoll ist. Aber auch die Kirschblüte und die Laubfärbung im Herbst sind sehenswert, so dass Otsu zu jeder Jahreszeit eine Reise wert ist.

Otsu is called the "green city on the water" by insiders, because it is situated magnificently between Lake Biwa and the mountains. First named in 667 AD, the city owes its continuous spiritual, economic and cultural success to its central location and its importance as a junction for shipping. The Enryaku Temple, founded about 1200 years ago, is one of the most important holy places of Buddhism in Japan and was with its 200 buildings added to the list of the UNESCO world cultural heritage sites. There are still some traditional manufacturers in Otsu, but of course numerous companies in the electronic line of business have also settled there. The citizens of Otsu like to have big celebrations, of which the fireworks at the Lake Biwa in August is one of the most spectacular events. The cherry blossom and the deciduous colours are also wonderful, so it is worth taking a trip to Otsu in every season.

Les locaux l´ appellent volontiers la « ville verte sur l´ eau » car elle est magnifiquement située entre le lac Biwa et les montagnes. Mentionnée pour la première fois en 667 après Jésus Christ, Otsu doit son développement spirituel, économique et culturel continu à sa position centrale et à son importance en tant que carrefour maritime. Le temple Enryaku, construit il y a environ 1 200 ans, fait partie des lieux saints les plus importants du bouddhisme au Japon et a été inscrit avec ses 200 bâtiments à la liste du Patrimoine mondial de l´ UNESCO. Il y a encore quelques artisans traditionnels à Otsu mais de nombreuses sociétés dans le secteur de l´ électronique se sont bien entendu également implantées entre-temps. Les habitants d´ Otsu aiment célébrer de grandes fêtes ; le feu d´ artifice sur le lac Biwa en août est particulièrement impressionnant. Les fleurs de cerisier et la couleur des feuilles mortes en automne sont tout aussi superbes, de sorte qu´ Otsu mérite d´ être visitée à n´ importe quelle période de l´ année.
