Economic & scientific Würzburg: a pioneer also when it comes to the medical sector. Würzburg saw the first type of university hospital as early as 1581 and, together with Heidelberg, Vienna, Cologne and Erfurt, ranks among the oldest university cities within the German-speaking countries. It homed renowned physicians like Koelliker and Virchow and it was here that Nobel Prize Winner Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the X-rays in 1895.
Today the hospital center of the Würzburg University
counts 18 hospitals and 21 health care centers as well as three further institutions.
Eight well-established interdisciplinary centers such as the tumor center bundle the medical know-how necessary to guarantee the patient's well-being. Another building block - the Neurovascular Center - is being set up at the moment.
The ZOM, center of surgical medicine, started operating in 2004 and in 2009, the center for internal medicine will open its doors. Both operate at a high medical and technical level. The advantage for patient and student: the interdisciplinary structure allows high-speed findings and innovations.
Basic research at the highest level is taken care of by the ZINF Research Center for Infectious Diseases. Their key target is the analysis of infectious processes in consideration of the molecular mechanisms, the spread factor of the causative organism, the tracking procedure and the part of the host organism. The specter of the organisms studied by the project teams ranges from viruses over bacteria to fungi and parasites.
The Rudolf-Virchow-Zentrum (RVZ)
is the research center of the German Research Foundation DFG at the University of Würzburg. It was started in January 2002 as DFG promoted center of excellence. Nine project teams are currently doing research on key proteins responsible for our cell functions and overall health.
