Festung Marienberg (Fortress Marienberg)

Update February 20, 2023:
Due to renovation work, the main castle with the courtyard, keep, Marienkirche, fountain house and access to the Fürstengarten will be closed from summer 2023. Visits to the fortress are only possible as part of guided tours for groups.

The Fortress Marienberg is the most dominating feature of the city; it towers above it all. Take a tour and learn about its history.

Fortress Marienberg is visible from seemingly everywhere in Würzburg. Originally, there was a celtic palisade castle at this site. 704 AD the first Würzburg church was erected here. At the beginning of the 13th century fortifications were built around the church. The fortress was expanded and renovated several times during the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

You can join a guided walking tour covering the castle keep, the Scherenberg gate, the Marienkirche - one of the oldest round churches in Germany -, the temple above the deep well from the Renaissance period, the dungeon of Tilman Riemenschneider, and the Fürstengarten with its magnificent views of the city.

Opening Hours:

In general, the fortress complex is accessible all year round and you may visit the compound on your own and for free. Due to an extensive renovation and restructuring process that will last until 2030 access to certain areas may temporarily be restricted. The restaurant "Burggaststätten" is closed. A kiosk sells refreshments.
