Fortress Marienberg (Festung Marienberg)

The fortress Marienberg is the most dominating feature of the city; it towers above it all. Join a tour and learn about its history.

Refuge during the Hallstatt era (around 1000 BC). Consecration as Virgin Mary Church in 706 AD. Fortress is started around 1200; the moat dates back to that time. From 1253 to 1719 seat of the Prince Bishops; main fortress surrounded by medieval ringwall with the Scherenbergtor (1482). Remodeled into a Renaissance castle and construction of the Echterbastei by Julius Echter after 1600. The temple above the deep well (104m) dates from this time. After the conquest by Gustav Adolf of Sweden in 1631, expanded into a Baroque Fortress with royal gardens.

The Fürstenbaumuseum is located in the East wing; features the living quarters of the Prince Bishops, treasury, and a section on the city history of Würzburg.
