Dundee, Scotland

Dundee, Scotland
60 km north of Edinburgh situated at the mouth of River Tay; the third biggest city in Scotland
Population of approximately 147,000
Twinned on 22 May 1962

Since ancient times, the shipbuilding, whaling and the subsequent jute industry, were the city's main line of business. Dundee was once a world centre of jute production. The city was characterised over years by the three Js - Jute, Jam and Journalism. The famous Orange Marmalade is the result of long and hard efforts of a Dundee merchant's wife, who took bitter (Seville) oranges delivered from Spain and turned them into an edible product. She boiled them down over and over again with sugar, till they became the world-known Scottish Orange Marmalade. Today, the main economic focus is situated in the field of newspapers & publishing companies and bio-medical research. Golfers are in seventh heaven in Dundee: the world-famous golf courses of St Andrews, Gleneagles and Carnoustie are located close by!

Dundee, Ecosse
